Nick’s journey with swimming began as an adult.

When learning to swim became a requirement for his work in aquatics, he found himself experiencing firsthand what it feels like to enter the water without the skills or confidence many people develop as children. He learned to swim through a program led by Nora while they worked together at Six Flags America—and what began as something he had to learn eventually became something he genuinely loves.

Nick's Experience

Nick went on to spend nearly a decade working in aquatics, serving in roles including lifeguard, head lifeguard, pool manager, and aquatics director, as well as training and certifying lifeguards. His experience includes certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED and First Aid, Lifeguard Instruction, and Ellis & Associates’ International Lifeguard Training Program (ILTP) instruction.

Over the years, Nick and Nora continued training together in the water, with Nora coaching him as he developed his swimming skills. Now, as a Swim Instructor with Nora’s School of Swim, Nick brings that experience full circle.

Nick's Approach

He primarily works with swimmers ages 5 and up and especially enjoys teaching children, teens, and adults who are learning to swim for the first time. His lessons are patient, relaxed, encouraging, and often filled with humor—but never cookie-cutter. Nick adapts each lesson to the swimmer in front of him, meeting students where they are and adjusting his approach as their comfort and skills develop. Because he learned as an adult himself, Nick understands that learning to swim later in life can feel intimidating. He also knows how quickly swimming can go from something you fear or avoid to something you genuinely enjoy. Today, swimming laps is one of his favorite forms of exercise, and he is passionate about water safety, increasing access to swim education, and helping more people feel comfortable and capable in the water.

A Prince George’s County native, Nick is a longtime friend of Nora’s and a strong believer in the mission behind Nora’s School of Swim.

As the founder of Nora’s School of Swim, Nora has built a program that reflects her 13+ years of teaching experience and her commitment to making swimming accessible for all. She has taught in nearly every aquatic setting—private and semi-private lessons, swim schools, amusement parks, community pools, and workshops. She has also served as a lifeguard, lifeguard instructor, and program coordinator overseeing more than 300 students, in addition to managing a waterpark.

Certifications held in her lifetime include Red Cross WSI (Water Safety Instructor), Jeff Ellis Swim Coordinator, E&A Lifeguard, E&A ILTP Lifeguard Instructor, US Masters Adult Learn-To-Swim, and she previously served as a Maryland Volunteer EMT.

Nora's Approach

Known for her upbeat, patient, and encouraging teaching style, Nora focuses on tailoring lessons to each student’s goals. She emphasizes goal setting, progress tracking, and positive reinforcement—creating a calm and fun atmosphere where swimmers of all ages can thrive. While she welcomes all students, Nora specializes in beginners and is especially passionate about breaking the stigma surrounding adults learning to swim.

Beyond teaching skills, Nora is committed to breaking the stereotype that “Black people can’t swim.” She believes that representation, accessibility, and encouragement are key to changing that narrative. Whether you take lessons with Nora or not, her dream is that every swimmer feels safe, confident, and empowered in the water. Looking to the future, Nora aspires to open her own swim facility, creating a welcoming space for swimmers of all backgrounds to learn, grow, and thrive.

Students and parents alike often share that Nora’s patience and calm demeanor put them at ease, while her ability to push just the right amount helps them progress quickly and confidently.
